(Credit: Hockey India)The India women’s team were knocked out of the Hockey World Cup by Australia after both teams played out a 0-0 draw. Australia went through to the semifinals due to them having more goals scored for as opposed to India with both teams having the same goal difference and points.

Due to that defeat, India will now need to defeat Australia to qualify for the semifinals.
The Aussies are a familiar foe for the Indians and in a recent tour both teams have played 4 closely fought matches with india losing 2, winning one and drawing one. Last 1 min left. India need to score or they are gone from the tournament. Time is Australia's friend at the moment. And that's that. the buzzer goes and time's up for India. They are eliminated from the World Cup!!!
Free hit now. Australia are running down time, keeping possession near the India corner. And a big shot from Tete has taken out Grace Young as she gets hit on the foot. She is being helped out.
Last 3 minutes and India are getting desperate. But their forward play is leaving a lot to be desired. Australia, meanwhile, have got a PC now. India are going to refer. They lose the referral and the PC stands. Remember, there's no goalie. And it's kept out but Australia have referred. Free hit to Australia.
Bichu comes off. India have 11 outfield players which means no room for error but also a chance to build pressure and use the extra player advantage.
And right on cue, Bichu is off and an extra outfield player is on. Less than 5 minutes to go and Australia won't mind it at all. Australia now with a golden chance to score with the goal gaping but Stewert can't reach it.
You wonder at what point will Marijne think of taking off the goalie and have an extra outfield player
Great save from Bichu as she makes a brilliant stop from an Australian forward and eventually there's a penalty corner now. And it's dealt with. India now need to throw caution to the wind and attack.
Navneet should have taken the shot there, and not Siami. Golden chance for India and once again, wastefulness and heavy touch inside the D costing the team dear
Australia have kept India penned in their own half. But India finally get out and have a golden chance!! Smashed inside by Deepika and the ball is in between the space between 2 Indian forwards and Navneet and Siami are both unsure and the chance is gone
Back for the 4th and final quarter. India have to score or they are out of the tournament. Australia now get a penalty corner. Colwill with a shot and that's deflected out.
India are finishing the third quarter strongly. They have 15 minutes to save their World Cup campaign. You would expect them to go all out while Australia would defend deep given that a draw will be enough for them to go through.
Ohhhhh!!!! Baljeet with another shot across goal and Deepika just needed a touch., But instead she has swung and got nothing but air!! India need to take these chances. The buzzer has gone off now and India just have 15 mins more.
Shilpi with a shot which is played across goal. Ishika was lurking but can't get the final touch as a chance goes begging for the Indians.
Poor from Sakshi Rana. She gifts Australia the ball near dotted circle, Australia enter the circle and a pass hit Sakshi’s foot. Australia score from the consequent penalty corner, and after a lengthy review the goal was disallowed for being a dangerous shot. Reprieve for India but they need to be careful with the rising individual errors.
Australia have a penalty corner now. AAAAND THAT'S A GOAL!!! IT'S KERSHAW!! The referee will check it though. Looks like it has struck an Indian defender's arm and it's deemed a dangerous shot and Australia have another goal disallowed.
India are trying to attack but their moves are constantly being broken down as Australia go on the counter. Kershaw has a golden chance to score for the Aussies but she has slashed it wide!!
And here come Australia and there's a shot lashed at the India goal but it's saved well. The danger isn't gone though as Australia get a free hit. They are playing it in their own half as they try to build something.
Back underway for the 3rd quarter as Australia start us off. India will need to switch gears in the last half an hour. They need a win. A draw will just not do.
India should have done better and converted that chance right at the hooter but they wouldn’t mind a goalless first half. They will hope to keep Australia at bay in the third quarter and then go all out in the fourth.
We are down to the last minute of this second quarter and Australia won't mind this at all. But wait!! India have got a PC now. Their first of the match. They can't do anything with it though as India's routine gets read by the Aussies. Nikki finds the ball in space and the ball hits her foot. The goal was gaping!!! That's that for this half as it stays 0-0.
This is a big blow for India. Siami is India’s key attacking threat and she hobbles off the pitch minutes after Ishika was escorted out after being hit on the head. No immediate clarity on extent of both injuries but it means the existing players will have to put in a longer, solid shift.
Lalremsiami is down now as she got hit on the knee on the followthrough of a shot that an Australian player attempted. She is limping at the moment as the Indian player is escorted out.
Rujuta did so well to win back possession in the attacking third. It was a rare chance for India to build pressure but they lose the ball almost immediately and had to sprint back deep in their half. India have to be better on the ball and more clinical.
Ishika is off the pitch for some medical attention after a ball ricochets off a stick hits her flush in the temple. She looks ok but India will not take any chances.
Schonell is barged off the ball as India take back possession in the midfield but they have given the ball back to the yellow jerseys and there's 4 vs 4 in the Indian half but the shot goes out.
Quick free hit taken by Australia and there's a reverse hit which Bichu parries. Deepika looks to get away with the ball but Australia have taken it back. Relentless pressure on the India defence.
We are underway for the second quarter and India attack with Navneet but it's dealt with and Australia are on the counter. They get a penalty corner!! And nothing comes off it as a shot is blazed over on the rebound.
Kaitlin Nobbs, who thwarted an Indian attack there, is the daughter of former men’s team coach Michael Nobbs, who passed away earlier this year. Not just her father, Kaitlin’s mother Lee Capes and her aunt, Michelle Hager, also played the sport at a high level.
Less than a minute left and you can feel India's desperation as they keep pouring forward. Remember, they need an outright win. Even a draw won't do. But with so many players in the attack India might leave some gaping holes in defence. And with that buzzer, the first quarter ends
In their desperation for an early goal, India are trying to force things and ending up conceding turnovers in their own half, which would make Sjoerd Marijne uncomfortable.
Australia are relentless as a ball comes dangerously towards the Indian goal but Savita makes a good save to keep it out. Tatum Stewart, meanwhile, has gotten a green card.
Green card to Baljeet now and India are down one player. Can Australia take advantage of an extra player? They are pouring attackers in the Indian half but they are dealth with.
Excellent tackle by Colwill to dispossess an Indian attacker and Australia can get things started again. They go inside the India half only to get the ball nicked off. Proper end to end match going on.
India’s defence in this World Cup has been surprisingly stubborn. Today, however, they will need two key attackers to join the party - Navneet, with her dual threat from field goals and penalty corners, and Deepika with her drag flicks.
And we are underway. India will get us underway. They are having all the possession to begin with but just like that Australia take it back. AAAND WILL YOU BELIEVE IT??? THEY HAVE SCORED!!! It's getting checked though. And it's deemed dangerous play and the goal has been chalked off.
Here come both sets of players. India in white and Australia in yellow. National anthems underway. India's first, followed by Australia's.

There was a strange sight at the Wagener Stadium: India were in orange, the Netherlands in blue. The colour swap was about the only thing the Dutch had surrendered. For long stretches, India surrendered almost everything else.
The Netherlands beat India 2-0 on Friday to underline the gulf between the World No.1 and a team that had arrived in the second round of the World Cup unbeaten and with renewed belief. India defended bravely and made the Dutch work for their goals, but never managed to keep the ball for long enough to seriously threaten the hosts.
